Job Description Summary:
The GIS analysis intern will help the City of Boulder further its mission by providing expert technical GIS services and support across the City.
Under supervision, the position will implement GIS projects in a range of policy areas and using a variety of analytic techniques.
The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise in GIS but also creative solutions to the team as it advances its goal of getting more value from the City’s data.

GIS analysis intern
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mapping and Geo-Spatial Analysis.
Designs and creates cartographic products for print, presentation or digital consumption.
Delivers spatial, visual and statistical analyses for clients in support of operational priorities and policy analysis.
Works with business users to design and deliver analyses and workflows that will meet business needs.
GIS asset and data maintenance.
Maintains and enhances key GIS datasets so that operational partners have best available information.
Implements GIS asset maintenance, and data quality best practices.
Participates in developing GIS data standards and operational procedures, follows data maintenance protocols, creates and maintains comprehensive metadata and documentation
Scripting and Integrations.
Uses object-oriented programming and scripting languages as they relate to web mapping applications, process improvement, and automation.
Supports system integrations between GIS assets and with non-GIS assets.
Collaboration with GIS communities of practice.
Works with GIS professionals in City departments to share resources, learning and best practices that advance the quality both of their own GIS work and that of the whole City.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Strong understanding of geospatial concepts.
Demonstrated knowledge of and proficient use of Geographic Information Systems, (GIS) software including ArcGIS tools
Strong attention to detail
Demonstrated self-sufficiency in a professional environment.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Experience working in municipal governments or otherwise demonstrated commitment to public service.
Database skills.
Knowledge of relational databases and of query languages such as SQL.
Competency with Access databases.
Experience in using open-source coding languages for geospatial analysis.
Knowledge of Python and/or R and associated packages relevant for such analysis.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment: Primarily works in a clean, comfortable office environment but some field work in a variety of weather conditions may be required.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN OR ACCOMPLISH:
The role provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to deepen their GIS skills in collaboration with senior GIS analysts, developers and the Enterprise GIS Administrator and to gain exposure to GIS work in high-performing local government.
The intern program will also include structured opportunities to learn about the work of departments across the City of Boulder.
